Men’s Soccer: Saints shutout by Clan
October 14,
2007
Lacey, WA – Simon Fraser University posted two goals
in the first half and three in the second on their way to a 5-0 shutout
victory over Saint Martin’s in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at
the Regional Athletic Complex.
“Simon Fraser is a top NAIA team and their visit to
lacey was one that I don’t think a lot of kids really understood the
significance of. They bring a very skillful and hardworking special
brand of soccer that we don’t always see. I think that there were some
lessons that we learned today; this is all about building character,”
said head coach Rob Walker.
Both teams played tough defense in the first half as
the score remained 0-0 through nearly 40 minutes of play. Simon Fraser
would change things in the 37th minute as Lucas Barrett scored on an
assist from Luca Bellisomo. The Clan would pick up another goal less
then three minutes later when Colin Strekmann got the ball to Justin
Carvery who beat the Saints’ defender for the goal.
Carvery would add another goal in the 68th minute
and pick up an assist on Barrett’s second goal at the 48:10 mark. The
final goal for the Clan came with just under two minutes to play when
Valente Giovanni scored on assists from Alan Chivers and Reece Miles.
The Saints were outshot by the Clan 29-7. Zac Lubin
and T.J. Young split time in the goal for SMU. Lubin posted eight saves
while Young had three.
“Tucker Maxwell worked really hard all day long and
had a very good game for us at the central defender position. His
partner in the back Andy Schroeder did a great job as well in that role.
That is significant because they had to work probably harder then any
other players in the game and they did quite good,” added Walker.
The Saints are on the road as they take on Seattle
Pacific University on Tuesday, October 16th in Seattle.
