Men’s Soccer: Saints unable to make it 2-0 against Argonauts
September 11, 2007
Lacey, WA – Notre Dame de Namur used two goals late
in the second half to record the win over Saint Martin’s in men’s soccer
action Tuesday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
“All credit to Notre Dame de Namur for really
putting together a good game today. It was a mirror of the game we
played against them a week and a half ago at the Humboldt tournament
except they did a little bit harder work and were rewarded with two good
goal opportunities,” said head coach Rob Walker.
NDNU got their first goal in the 73rd minute as Sean
Fogt used a bicycle kick to send the ball into the back left corner of
the goal off of an assist from Emmanuel Vazquez. Vazquez would pick up
the Argos second goal of the day just two minutes later.
Both sides were fairly even in the first half with
both teams getting off six shots each. But the Argos broke out in the
second half sending 13 shots at the SMU goal to the Saints’ seven.
Zac Lubin picked up seven saves on the day while
NDNU goalie David Meherg had nine.
“Reflecting on this game I think we’ll find out that
there was work we needed to do in each third of the field and didn’t get
done quite as well as we would have liked. The guys are going to have to
get it together as we head into conference games because the standard
that NDNU set against us is one we have to beat,” added Walker. “We’ll
head back to the drawing board and see if we can’t get everything worked
out, get positive and get going.”
The Saints get ready to head to Montana State
Billings to take on the Yellowjackets on September 16th.
