Men’s Soccer: Saints use late shot to defeat Argos
September 1, 2007
Arcata, CA – A goal by Daniel Palermo in the 86th
minute propelled Saint Martin’s to a 1-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur
Saturday afternoon at the Humboldt State Quiznos Soccer Classic.
Palermo converted a rebound off a shot from Jacob
Dupuis for the game winning goal.
“It was a really really tight game; it was a chess
match in the first half. Neither team had good chances I felt in the
first half,” said head coach Rob Walker. “The game opened up a bit in
the second half but it was still tight with each team getting the ball,
adjusting to the other and then losing it, adjusting and then losing it.
Overall it was a great effort, great work and well organized.”
The Saints outshot the Argonauts 13-12. Zac Lubin,
who played the entire game in the goal, had to make just one save for
Saint Martin’s, recording the first shutout in school history.
“Tucker Maxwell did well in the back, Jesse Ramos
did well in the middle and Palermo had a significant role in the middle
and up front,” added Walker.
With the win the Saints improve to 2-3 on the
season. They will travel back home to take on Whitman College September
4th.
