Men’s Soccer: Saints win home opener
August 27,
2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s men’s soccer defeated
Hawaii Hilo 2-1 to pick up the first win in the program’s history in
their home opener Monday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.
“Today was a historic day, not only was it our first
home game but we started with a win. The goals were taken well and our
defense was good when it needed to be,” said head coach Rob Walker.
Jacob Dupuis got the Saints on the board in the
first half as he sent a shot into the goal on an assist by Daniel
Palermo 15 minutes into the game.
UHH would pick up their only goal twenty minutes
into the second half when Luis Lanz scored. The Saints quickly regained
the lead just over a minute later when Chris Laise scored on a cross
served by Nick Cook. They were able to fend off the Vulcans for the win.
Palermo had three shots and Laise two for SMU who
was out-shot 11-7 by Hawaii Hilo. Zac Lubin played all 90 minutes in the
goal for the Saints and posted five saves.
“Throughout the game Eric Orozco, Jesse Ramos, and
Tucker Maxwell played well in the back. Nick Cook was a pleasant
surprise in his role as a wide midfielder,” added Walker. “The Vulcans
caused us to play under pressure and play well. We did a good job of
solving the problems they caused. The school year started and there are
still many lessons to be learned but our enthusiasm carried us through
today and hopefully throughout the season.”
The Saints are back on the road later this week when
they take on Humboldt University in Arcata, CA.
