Men’s Golf: Prante captures regional crown, Saints fall one stroke shy
of team title

Phoenix, AZ --- Saint Martin's senior Shane Prante
(Olympia, WA) fired a final-round 5-under-par 66 to finish 9-under-par
to win the NCAA Division II West Regional by six strokes Wednesday at
The Legacy Golf Resort (6,921 yards).
Saint Martin's vaulted from sixth place to second
and earned an at-large berth to nationals.
Four strokes separated the top five teams with No.1
seed Cal State Bakersfield (297=865) hanging on to win by one stroke
over Saint Martin's (277=866), which shot a 7-under par 277, the best
round of the three-day, eight-team tournament.
The Saints were led by two-time All-American Shane
Prante, who fired a 5-under 66 to take medalist honors by six shots at
9-under 204. Prante advances to nationals for the third straight year.
The two-time All-American shot 2-under 69 in each of the first two
rounds.
Chris Westrum (Sr., Kapa'au, HI) shot a 69 and tied
for 12th at 218. Jordan Burns (So., Longview, WA) shot 72 and tied for
23rd at 222. Peter Perkins (Jr., Bremerton, WA) shot 71 and tied for
26th at 223, and Derek Siesser (Jr., Maple Valley, WA) shot 71 and tied
for 38th at 231.
The national championships will be May 16-19 in
Daniels, West Virginia.
