Men’s Golf: Prante leads Saints to 11th-place finish at 17-team Cal
State Monterey Bay Invite
March 22, 2006
Monterey, CA --- Shane Prante (Sr., Olympia, WA)
shot a two-day total of 149 on Tuesday to help the Saint Martin's
University men’s golf team finish in an 11th-place tie at the Cal State
Monterey Bay Invitational at the Bayonet Golf Course.
The 17-team tournament, which included 10 of the top
25 teams in latest GCAA/NCAA II Coaches Poll, was rained out Sunday and
the Saints played only 14 holes on Monday as the second round was
canceled because of heavy rain and standing water on the greens. The
first round was finished prior to another 18 holes on Tuesday.
Prante finished with rounds of 75 and 74 to lead
Saint Martin's, which finished the tournament with a 617 as a team.
The medalist at 1-under 143 (71-72) was Brian
Thompson from Cal State Monterey Bay.
“We're definitely not pleased with finishing 11th,
but we beat some teams we needed to beat,” Saints coach Kurt Kageler
said. “We are on the inside track to securing a bid to the NCAA regional
championships in Phoenix.”
Host Cal State Monterey Bay took the team title with
a score of 587 (292-295). Nationally No.4-rated Lynn University (Fl.)
was second at 594 (302-292) and No.7 Western Washington finished third
at 602 (301-301).
SMU’s Chris Westrum (Sr., Kapa'au, HI) shot
consecutive rounds of 76 and Derek Siesser (Jr., Maple Valley, WA) and
Peter Perkins (Jr., Bremerton, WA) both finished with a combined 161.
John Eisentrout (Fr., Olympia, WA) added a 162.
The Saints take a week off before competing in the
Sonoma State University Invitational on Apr. 3-4 at Santa Rosa Golf and
Country Club.
