Saints' Prante earns first victory of spring
March 8, 2006
Saint Martin's University's Shane Prante is quickly
establishing himself as the Tiger Woods in Northwest college golf
circles.
Prante shot a 73 at Washington National Golf Course
in Auburn on Tuesday to wrap up his first victory of the fledgling
spring season.
He finished the three-round Washington National
Winter Championship with a score of 8-over-par 224 in wet, windy and
cold conditions.
The Saints have now played two tournaments this year
and six since the beginning of the school year, and Prante has won three
of the six.
He finished two strokes ahead of runner-up Matt Ma
of the University of Oregon for the individual title.
"That's pretty good," Saint Martin's coach Kurt
Kageler said. "I'd take that.
"It was a good win for Shane, but our team can play
better."
The Saints finished with a team score of 935, tying
them with the University of Washington and Idaho University for fourth
out of six schools.
Oregon won with a score of 917.
Chris Westrum had the next best showing for the
Saints with a score of 232. John Eisentrout followed with a 237, then
Derek Siesser with a 244 and Hiro Nezu with a 250.
The Saint's three individual players were Peter
Perkins (241), Jordan Burns (246) and Sean O'Mera (267).
"We're looking forward to getting into some good
(playing) conditions," Kageler said. "Hopefully that will help the team
play better."
The Saints have next week off then travel to
California for the Monterey Bay Invitational.
