Men’s Golf: Saints 10th at Chico State Wells

Some of the top Division II men's golf programs in
the nation and Division I powerhouse UCLA, gathered in Chico, CA Oct.
10-11, for the Chico State Wells Fargo Invitational at the Butte Creek
Country Club. The field included the Division I Bruins and seven of the
top 30 Division II teams in the nation.
The 54-hole tournament kicked off with a shotgun
start Monday morning. After playing 36 holes Monday, the teams
reconvened Tuesday morning for the final round.
Saint Martin's, ranked No. 15 nationally according
to Golfstat, finished 10th with a team score of 906. The Saints carded a
round of 301 after shooting 312 and 293 on Monday in the 12-team
tournament.
Cal State Bakersfield, which held a three-shot lead
entering the final round, shot a 299 in the final round to drop into
second place behind UCLA. UCLA carded rounds of 291, 285, and 290 to
record the six-stroke win.
Individually, No. 10 ranked California State
University-Stanislaus’ Ryan Thornberry shot a final round 71 to finish
at six-under and win the tournament by four strokes. SMU’s Shane Prante
(Sr., Olympia, WA), the top-ranked Division II player in the nation,
finished 10th to lead the Saints with a score of 217 (75-71-71).
Derek Siesser (Jr., Maple Valley, WA) scored a 226
to place 32nd, and both Peter Perkins (Jr., Bremerton, WA) and Hiro Nezu
(So., Shizuokoshi, Japan) scored a 233.
