Saints finish historic season in nation's top-twenty; Prante named first team All-America again

June 2, 2005

Saint Martin's placed 17 out of 20 teams at the NCAA Division II National Tournament in Savannah, Georgia last week.  Shane Prante led the Saints, finishing tied for 14th out of 101 golfers.  Prante was awarded his second All-America selection by the Golf Coaches of America Association at the event for his performance over the entire season.

The appearance of a full team at a national tournament was a first for Saint Martin's since joining the NCAA in 1998.

"This was a great season, one that I'll always remember," commented Saints coach Kurt Kageler.  "We would have liked to fare better at the tournament, but no matter how you look at this was a great stepping stone for our program.  With the recruits we have coming next year, I know we'll have another shot on this stage next year."

Prante who shot rounds of 70, 71, and 70 in the final three rounds on the par 71 course, was hampered by a first round 79 that reflected poor performances on four of his final five holes.  That stretch was made difficult by high winds and an eventual delay due to thunderstorm.  He finished the four round tournament with a six over 290.

Also scoring for the Saints were Jared Bouchey (T65, +21), Chris Westrum (T83, +27), Jordan Burns (T99, +33), and Kris Swanson (T99, +33).
