Saints earn first trip to national golf touney

May 10, 2005

Saint Martin's qualified for its first NCAA Division II national tournament behind its best round of the regional championship on Wednesday.

Needing to finish among the top five teams to advance, Saint Martin's tied with Cal State Bakersfield for fourth place at 918, two strokes ahead of sixth-place Cal State Stanislaus.

Four of five Saints shot their best round of the tournament Wednesday, including Kris Swanson, who fired a 1-over par 73 and finished sixth at 7-over 223.  Shane Prante finished ninth at 226, Chris Westrum (74) tied for 19th at 234, Jared Bouchey (85) was 34th at 242, and Jordan Burns (78) took 39th at 247 in a tournament marked by gusty wins and low temperatures.

The Saints, nationally ranked at 21 by the Golf Coaches Association of America, will travel to Savannah, Georgia to participate in the tournament May 15-19 at The Club of Savannah Harbor.  With an average score of 71.23, Shane Prante is still the top-ranked player in NCAA Division II according to Golfstat.

"Western Washington won the toughest region in the country and are currently ranked third nationally," Saints coach Kurt Kageler commented, "We beat them earlier this spring and that tells us we can play with anyone.  We have every reason to believe we have as good a shot as anyone at nationals."
