Saints stumble in Stanislaus, await call for regionals

April 18, 2005

Saint Martin's took 15th in a field of 17 at the Buzzini Invitational hosted by California State-Stanislaus at the Turlock Country Club on April 10-12.  The untimely performance dropped the Saints from 19th to 26th in the national standings by GolfStat, a little over a week prior to the announcing of the West Regional Tournament field.

"We were disappointed with our play at Stanislaus, however, we have had a strong season overall and I believe the committee will recognize that and select us to participate in the regional tournament." commented Saints coach Kurt Kageler.

Shane Prante fired rounds of 78, 74, and 73 (225, +9) to lead the Saints and finish tied at 30 (out of 94 golfers).  Also scoring for SMC was Jared Bouchey (T 37, 226), Kris Swanson (T 69, 236), Derek Siesser (73, 238), and Jordan Burns (T 82, 243).

The host Warriors won the tournament with a three-day team total of 861.  Andy Moren of CSUS took medalist honors carding rounds of 71 and back to back 70s (211, -5).

Prante remains the top-ranked golfer in all of Division II with an adjusted scoring average of 71.23.  He is ranked 14th nationally among all collegiate golfers.
