Saints lose to Western in season opener

September 20, 2004

Saint Martin's opened their much anticipated golf season with a disappointing 290-298 loss to Western Washington at the Sudden Valley Club in Bellingham on Friday.

The Vikings, ranked eigth nationally, clinched the dual match with a cool 1-under in the last four holes.  The Saints had kept pace until then, but shot 10-over in the same critical stretch.  Coach Kageler reported, "We played well through 14 holes, then we kind of blew up... but I know we can compete with them, we're right there."

Jared Bouchey's 2-under 70 led the Saints, while Kris Swanson shot a 71 and Shane Prante carded a 74.

The Saints will get another shot on at the Vikings and a national ranking as they take part in the Western Washington Invitational on September 26th-28th at the Bellingham Country Club.
