Men's golf: Saints card best three-day total in school history; take 2nd in Arizona April 09, 2004 Saint Martin's recorded a total of 844 strokes (-20) over three rounds to place second in the 15-team Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon University (Phoenix) earlier this week. The Saints total, six strokes behind winner Cal-State San Marcos, sets a school record for a three round event. Senior Kris Swanson fired a 69-69-70 (208, -8) to lead the Saints and tie for fourth in the field of 90 golfers. The Saints second place finish represents a spring resurgence (SMC placed 13th in the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC-Davis in late March) and renews hopes to qualify for the NCAA regional championships in early May. The Saints enjoyed a top-ten national ranking after the fall segment but dropped out after a sluggish start this spring. After recording a 287 in the first round (tied-4th), Saint Martin's led the field in rounds two (281, tied with two others) and three (276). "We've been struggling of late," coach Kurt Kageler commented, "so this was a good breakout tournament for us." Tom Hinton shot a 209, Shane Prante 211, Chris Westrum 218 and Jared Bouchey 222 to round out the Saints scoring. The Saints travel to Spokane to take on Gonzaga University in a dual match today before heading to the George Buzzini/Stanislaus Invitational in Turlock, CA this weekend.
