Nationally ranked Saints open spring segment, Prante shoots 67 to medal

February 11, 2004

Saint Martin's opened the spring segment of their season by hosting Western Washington University on Tuesday.  The Saints finished the fall segment as the ninth ranked team in NCAA Division II with a adjusted scoring average of 73.32.  Unfortunately, the eighth ranked Vikings (72.78 adjusted scoring average) edged the Saints by two strokes in the dual meet held at the Olympia Country Club.  Western combined for a score of 286 (+2) while the Saints scorers totaled 288 (+4).  Shane Prante  of Saint Martin's carded a 67, four-under-par, to lead all golfers.

Commenting on the opener, assistant coach Todd Abbot said, "It was good to get the competitive juices flowing again after a three-month layoff; however we need to, and can, play much better.  We are going to have to play better in a hurry as our first major tournament of the spring is in two weeks in Bakersfield, California.  The team knows if we want to get to the National Championships then everyone is going to have to play better."  The Family Motors Invitational in Bakersfield is hosted by #2 Cal State-Bakersfield and features an elite field of teams.

Other scorers for Saint Martin's on Tuesday were Jared Bouchey (71), Kris Swanson (74), and Derrick Potter (76).  Also on the board for the Saints was Chris Westrum, who shot an 83, while Tom Hinton (75), Elijah Perkins (80), and Ryan Brokaw (89) golfed unattached.
