Prante Sets Tournament Record, Leads Saints to National Ranking!

October 8, 2003

Sophomore Shane Prante smashed the tournament record at the Viking Invitational Golf Tournament in Bellingham last week. Prante had a three-round total of 202, 14-under par, five strokes better than the previous record. His remarkable performance has lead the Saints to an early national ranking: 2nd in NCAA Division II according to Golfstat.

Posting a pair of 66s on Monday and 70 on Tuesday, Prante led all golfers. However, the Saints totaled 865 earned only a fifth place in team standings. "We led the tournament after the first two rounds but then had a mediocre score," coach Kurt Kageler said. "We shot 1-over as a team. That's pretty good for us. We know we can compete at a very high level. This tournament had five of the top-10 teams in the nation. The guys played well. It's early in the season. It's a good start for us."

The Saints have two tournaments in California this month to finish out the fall schedule. October 12-14 they will be in Chico for the Subway Invitational, and October 26-28 they will be in Bakersfield for the Elco Invitational. Both of these tournaments will feature competition with nationally ranked teams.
