Men’s Basketball: Saints can’t fend off ThunderWolves
November 30, 2007
Pueblo, CO – Saint Martin’s had four players in
double figures but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Colorado State
University-Pueblo 90-77 Friday Night in their first game of the Chuck
Stephens Classic.
Jake Linton led the Saints with 22 points. Bill
Richardson had 12 while Brendan Campbell added 10. Galen Squiers came
off the bench to pick up 10 for the Saints.
“Galen played really well as did Blake (Poole)
again, we got some really good production from the bench,” said head
coach Keith Cooper.
The Saints scored 11 of the first 14 point to take
an early eight point advantage but the ThunderWolves battled back to
take the lead. Up by 2 at 30-28 with five minutes left in the half
Pueblo went on a 12-3 run to take an 11 point lead into the break.
Saint Martin’s was unable to recover in the second
half. They pulled to within five at the 16:23 mark but that was as close
as they would get as CSUP went up by as much as 16 in the half.
SMU shot 50 percent from the field but the
ThunderWolves posted a 56.5 shooting percentage.
“Offensively we played okay and shot the ball well,
but we didn’t defend very well especially on the perimeter,” said
Cooper. “In the second half we scrambled and played with them but we
can’t give up a double figure lead in the first half.”
The Saints take on Regis University on the final day
of the tournament tomorrow.
