Men’s Basketball: Saints can’t fend off Geoducks
November 9, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s was unable to fend off a
hot shooting Evergreen State College as they fell 97-85 in an exhibition
game at the SMU Pavilion Saturday night.
SMU built an 11 point lead with four minutes left in
the first half only to see ESC tie it with 1:09 on the clock. Three good
free throw shots, one by Brendan Campbell and two from Bill Richardson
would give Saints Martin’s the three point lead at the half.
The two teams would be tied twice early in the
second half before a three by ESC’s Marcus Whittaker would put the
Geoducks ahead for good at the 13 minute mark. SMU pulled within three
at 68-65 with 9:11 left to play but Evergreen put together an 11-2 run
to tally a 12 point lead the Saints couldn’t recover from.
“I’ll give a lot of credit to Evergreen, their kids
played very tough. They’ve got a couple of really good players and
guards that really attacked us,” said head coach Keith Cooper.
Bill Richardson led the Saints with 22 points and
pulled down 12 rebounds. Brendan Campbell added 18 points while Jake
Linton had 15. Tyler Nixon posted 12 points and nine rebounds.
Evergreen’s Nate Menafee led all scorers with 27
points on the night. Evergreen shot 66.7 percent from the field in the
second half and 55.1 percent for the game.
“Bill played really well tonight and Brendan played
a good second half,” added Cooper. “We’re inexperienced on the perimeter
and have to get better there. I know we’re going to have a good team we
just have to keep improving, which we’re doing. We’ll be better tomorrow
then we were today.”
Saint Martin’s will play again next Friday as they
head to Seattle to take part in the Elgin Baylor Tip-Off Classic facing
off against Cal State Stanislaus.
