Two Saints earn weekly conference honors
April 1,
2008
Lacey, WA – Sam Washington and Brandi Klemm were
named as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference male track and field
Athlete-of-the-Week and softball Pitcher-of-the-Week respectively.
Washington added 1 ˝ inches to his previous GNAC
best shot put throw finishing second at the UW Huskey Preview with a
toss of 48’ 6 ˝”, a new school record.
“Sam is building on what he achieved in high school
in the throwing events. He has smashed every SMU indoor and outdoor
school record in the four events he has competed in,” said head coach
Julie Sullivan. “Sam has a great work ethic and thoroughly deserves this
award. To come into the GNAC as a freshman and be leading some well
accomplished throwers from other schools is a fantastic achievement and
we know that he will not stop there.”
Klemm won her only two decisions helping the Saints
to a 3-3 record at the Tournament of Champions, the best record of any
GNAC team at the tournament. She posted a 1.94 earned run average in 18
innings allowing just five runs and pitched 4-0 shutout against
Chaminade. Klemm also had a homerun and three RBI for the Saints in the
tournament.
“Brandi did a great job for us down there. She
doesn’t stop; she keeps growing and improving and is hitting her peak at
the right time. It’s very exciting to see a freshman come in and make
the impact that she has,” said head coach Tiffany Qunell.
Kristi Sigafoos also received honorable mention for
batting .500 at Turlock. She had nine hits in 18 at bats while driving
in four runs and scoring four times. She has now hit safely in her last
seven games.
