Basketball: Saints land six on GNAC Academic Team

Spokane, WA – Saint Martin’s got a total of six
basketball student-athletes, four women and two men, named to the
2007-08 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Basketball Academic
all-conference team.
Sade Smith posted the best grade point average among
the 52 scholar athletes with a 3.94 GPA. Smith is a senior majoring in
psychology.
Brendan Campbell was one of three athletes to make
it to the team for the third year in a row. Campbell, a senior biology
major, posted a 3.49 GPA.
Selected for the second time in as many years was
Jake Linton, a junior who is majoring in business and holds a 3.33 grade
point.
Smith and Linton were also named to the ESPN The
Magazine CoSIDA College Division Academic All-District basketball teams.
“It’s good to see Brendan and Jake recognized for
their academics and athletics. They both work very hard in the classroom
and on the floor,” said men’s head coach Keith Cooper.
The women’s team had three first time selections
including Amy Layton, Jamey Gelhar, and Megan Busch. A senior biology
major, Layton posts a 3.84 GPA. Gelhar is a sophomore business major
with a 3.54 GPA while Busch has a 3.50 grade point as a sophomore math
major.
“We have always stressed classroom performance in
our program and this year is another example of what good students can
accomplish both on the court and in the classroom. I feel very
privileged to coach these student-athletes,” said women’s head coach Tim
Healy.
To be eligible for the academic team,
student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be
in at least their second year of competition at their university.
