SMU debuts new seating in Pavilion
January 12, 2006
LACEY, WA --- The Saint Martin’s men’s and women’s
basketball teams debut the new lower level seating in Saint Martin's
Pavilion this evening with the women’s tip-off set for 5:30p.m. against
Western Oregon and the men at 7:30p.m. against Central Washington, both
Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests.
The seat replacement culminates a $596,000 pavilion
makeover--$26,000 on the floor, $40,000 on the scoreboard and sound
system, $100,000 on the roof, and $430,000 on the bleachers.
The wood bleachers that had been used since 1968
were replaced with red molded plastic throughout the Pavilion. The
highlights of the upgrade are the 357 theater seats behind both team
benches and the “SMU” shadowed in black and white in the student
section.
“The new seating has taken us from a good facility
to a first rate basketball arena. In my opinion this is now the standard
bearer for GNAC basketball,” said Tim Healy, head women’s basketball
coach.
The last time the old bleachers were used was when
the women played host to Cal State Chico in the Budd Bay Embroidery
Christmas Classic on December 21.
The men are home for the first time since their
December 6 rout of Puget Sound Christian.
“We are glad to be back home and the bleachers look
great. The improvements to the Pavilion far outweigh the inconvenience
of playing elsewhere for a couple of weeks,” said head men’s basketball
coach, Keith Cooper.
