Saints sophomore sets school record in cross country race

September 30, 2002

THE OLYMPIAN
LACEY, WA - Sophomore Ann McCanick set a school record with a time of 19 minutes over 5,000 meters as Saint Martin's hosted its own invitational cross country meet on Saturday.

McCanick finished sixth in the women's race but was just 13 seconds behind second-place Molly Phimister of Clark Community College as there were just 15 seconds separating second from sixth in an ultra competitive race.

"The women had a super day," Saint Martin's coach Brad Hooper said, who fielded an incomplete team. "Our three runners all had personal bests, and they were the fastest trio in school history."

Senior Julie Thielen was 20th in 19:32, while freshman Nicole Beatty was 26th in 19:41.

Beatty finished right behind The Evergreen State College's top runner, Candace Owens, who ran a 19:37.

Seattle Pacific University won the team title with 39 points, while Western Washington finished second behind individual winner Ashlee Vincent, who ran an 18:26.

In the men's race, Saint Martin's finished third in team scoring with 75 points, behind winner Seattle University's 33 and runner-up Seattle Pacific's 61.

Evergreen State was fifth with 101 points.

Olympia area resident Miguel Galeana, running unattached, won the men's 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:01, far ahead of runner-up Steve Manos of Seattle U (26:10).

Junior Nathan Carlson topped Saint Martin's with a fifth-place finish at 26:41, while sophomore Andy Prentice was seventh at 26:55 and Chris Carpenter 12th at 27:46.

Evergreen State was led by Keith Darrock (11th, 27:20) and Josh Klimek (16th, 27:50).
