Baseball: Saints conclude series against UHH

Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s wrapped up play against
the University of Hawaii Hilo with two losses falling 20-4 and 6-2
Saturday at Saints Field.
The Vulcan bats came alive in game one as they
started the game with four runs in the top of the first; they broke the
game open in the fifth inning with 11 runs on six hits and four costly
Saint errors. They went on to add five more in the sixth.
Hilo was led by centerfielder Dayne Ogawa who was 5
for 5 with a double and a homerun while driving in seven runs. They had
three other players with three hits in the game.
Andrew Braegelmann had three hits for the Saints
with a double and two singles while Shane Schoeneberg went 2 for 3 with
two singles. Joe Davis earned the victory for UHH while Scott Leshner
was tagged with the loss for the Saints.
Saint Martin’s picked up the first run of game two
in the bottom of the third as Schoeneberg led off the inning with a
double to left and came around to score on a single through the left
side by Nate Baker.
In the fifth inning Tom Barlow led off with a double
to right center advanced to third in a single by Corey Grayson and
scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Cole.
The Saints held on to a shutout until the seventh
inning when UHH broke out with six runs on four hits and two SMU errors
to take the 6-2 lead.
The Saints were unable to string anything together
in the bottom half of the inning and were hit with the loss.
Andrew Neisinger, who threw six shutout innings for
the Saints, took the loss. Schoeneberg had the only multi-hit game for
the Saints with two doubles.
The Saints are back in action this Tuesday as they
take on Concordia in a doubleheader at Saints Field.
