Baseball: Baker double lifts Saints over Wildcats
February 29, 2008
Lacey, WA – Nate Baker hit a double to center
driving in the winning run and breaking the 5-5 tie as the Saints
defeated Central Washington University 6-5 in their home opener Friday
at Saints Field.
With the score knotted at five apiece, Andrew
Salinas led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, pinch runner
Corey Grayson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shane
Schoeneberg setting up for Baker’s game winning double.
The Wildcats got on the board first with three runs
in the second and added one more in the third on a RBI double by Nate
Rylaarsdam to take the 4-0 lead. But Saint Martin’s battled back
tallying four runs in the fifth inning on three hits including a two-run
shot by Brandon Kuykendall.
Andrew Neisinger picked up the win in relief, going
two innings and allowing one run on three hits while walking one and
striking out one.
Luke Abbott and Kuykendall had two hits each for the
Saints, who scattered 10 hits in the game.
Game two of the doubleheader was called in the top
of the third inning with the Saints up 6-0 due to rain. The game will be
continued from that point when the Wildcats return to Saint Martin’s on
April 26th.
SMU heads over to Ellensburg on Saturday for another
doubleheader against the Wildcats.
