Baseball: Saints fall in final two games of the season

Lacey, WA – Western Oregon University put together
two late rallies to beat Saint Martin’s 6-1 in game one and 3-1 in game
two in the final games of the season.
The Saints picked up their only run of game one in
the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Shane Schoeneberg to score Maki
Smith.
Nick Bolthouse started on the mound for the Saints
holding the Wolves scoreless through seven. With one out, Coubi Jiles
walked, stole second and came around to score on a single down the left
field line by Brent Mertens.
Andrew Neisinger was brought in the relieve
Bolthouse and the Wolves proceeded to go on a tear. Neisinger faced just
five batters and gave up five runs on four hits before giving way to
Andrew Speer who closed out the inning.
Bolthouse allowed just two earned runs but was
tagged with the loss. Dan Straily earned the victory throwing seven
innings and holding the Saints to just four hits.
Vince Maughan had two of the Saints’ hits while Nate
Baker and Mickey Letofsky each had one.
The Saint bats struggled again in game two as SMU
only got three hits off of Western Oregon starter Mike Cusick. Cusick
threw all seven innings and walked just one while striking out five.
Randy Fox was hit with his first loss of the season.
Western Oregon took the early lead with one run in
the second on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Sutton. SMU tied things up in the
four when Siler doubled to left center and scored on a double by Richard
O’Neill.
The Wolves were able to get the go ahead run in the
fifth on a sacrifice fly by Joe McCormick; they added an insurance run
in the seventh.
O’Neill had two of the Saints’ hits with two
doubles. Siler accounted for the only other hit.
The Saints wrap up their season with an 18-30
overall record and a 10-14 in conference play.
