Baseball: Saints split twinbill with Central

Ellensburg, WA – Adam Siler had five RBIs in game
one as Saint Martin’s earned a spilt with Central Washington University
beating them 14-10 in the opener Sunday. Central was able to avoid the
sweep by taking game two 6-5.
The Saints were down early in game one, 4-0 after
two, but picked up two runs in the third before posting a six spot in
the fourth. Maki Smith had an RBI single then with two on and one out
Adam Siler homered to right center. SMU picked up two more runs later in
the inning on a double by Curtis Thibault.
Saint Martin’s added four more runs in the seventh
on a triple by Nate Baker, single by Siler, and a pinch hit two-run shot
by Craig Yuhas.
The Saints had a total of 15 hits in the game
including two each by Smith, Baker, Thibault, and Richard O’Neill. Baker
scored four runs and Thibault had three RBIs.
Jamie Nilsen led the Wildcats with three hits,
including two home runs, and four runs batted in. Dean Tomlinson also
homered in the game for Central.
Nick Bolthouse started on the mound for the Saints,
going five innings and picking up the win.
In the second game, the Saints took a 5-3 lead in
the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Gronowski and an infield single
by Baker, but the Wildcats tied it in the bottom of the inning on a
sacrifice fly by Nilsen and a single by A.J. Gosney.
Central picked up the winning run in the sixth
inning on a fielder’s choice by John Lobbestael. Gosney and Lobbestael
each had two hits for the Wildcats. O’Neill led the Saints with three
hits while Andy Cole and Vince Maughan each had two.
Kevin Walkenhauer earned the win for Central while
Andrew Neisinger was hit with the loss.
The split left the Saints (4-4) a game back of GNAC
leader Northwest Nazarene (5-3) and tied for second with Western Oregon
(2-2) in the conference standings.
The Saints will play Cal State Stanislaus this
weekend in a four game series at home.
