Baseball: Saints sweep Wildcats; Wonhoff tosses shutout
March 31, 2007
Lacey, WA – Saint Martin’s baseball picked up two
wins Saturday, defeating Central Washington University 5-3 in game one
and then 4-0 in game two behind the solid pitching of Tip Wonhoff.
Wonhoff was consistent from start to finish throwing
all seven innings for the Saints. He scattered six hits and didn’t walk
a batter. Wonhoff has walked just one batter in 47 innings this year.
The Saints’ offense did their part posting crooked
numbers in the second and fourth innings. Curtis Thibault and Tanner
Gronowski each picked up an RBI. Thibault was 2-3 in the game with two
runs scored.
The Saints rallied for the win in game one. After
Central took the early 2-0 lead through two the Saints added two of
their own in the fifth. Central regained the lead with one more in the
top of the sixth on an RBI single by Justin Marshall but SMU answered
back in the bottom of the inning.
With one on and two out Vince Maughan singled
through the left side to score Andy Cole and tie the game 3-3.
Adam Siler led off the seventh with a hit, pinch
hitter Craig Yuhas singled and Richard O’Neill walked. With the bases
loaded and no outs Thibault singled to right side to bring in Siler and
Yuhas, putting the Saints back on top. The Wildcats couldn’t put
anything together in the final two innings giving the Saints the win.
Pat Capone started for the Saints going sixth and
one third innings giving up three runs. Andrew Neisinger came in to
close out the game for the Saints not allowing a hit, striking out four
and picking up the win. Tyler Levin took the loss for the Wildcats.
The Saints have two more games against Central this
weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow in Ellensburg.
