Baseball: Saints win one of three against Broncos

Pomona, CA (February 17) – Cal Poly Pomona scored in
the bottom of the ninth to edged out Saint Martin’s 4-3 in game one but
the Saints came back with clutch hitting and solid pitching to take game
two 7-4.
The Saints gave up three runs in the second but tied
the game in the eighth. Richard O’Neill doubled to drive in the first
run and then scored on a home run by Adam Siler.
With one on and one out in the bottom of the ninth
Kevin Falls double down the line to score Matt Davidson with the winning
run.
Nick Bolthouse started for the Saints giving up just
two hits and one earned run through seven innings but got a no decision.
Scott Leshner, who came in to get the final out of the eighth, was
tagged with the loss.
Shane Schoeneberg had a two-run single in the first
to cap off a three run inning for the Saints in game two. SMU added one
run in the second and third innings and two more in the fourth to put
together a 7-3 lead.
Brett Efaw threw a strong six innings for the Saints
allowing just three earned runs on eight hits. Adam Siler came in to
close out the game and earned the save. He gave up just one hit before
retiring the side.
Nate Baker and Tanner Gronowski each had two hits
for the Saints with Baker picking up an RBI. Gronowski and Craig Yuhas
put up doubles.
The Broncos were led by A.J. Cavaleto and Kevin
Falls who had two hits each.
The series wrapped up on Sunday with the Broncos
pulling out a 6-5 win.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the
bottom of the first on a two-run homer by designated hitter John
Leonard. The Saints rallied to post a four spot in the second, one run
scored on a base hit by Gronowski and the other three on a double to
left by Siler. SMU picked up another run in the third on a base hit by
Curtis Thibault.
The Broncos were able to get one back in the bottom
of the third. Then in the fifth Mike Evola and Leonard hit RBI doubles
to give Cal Poly the lead and the win as the Saints were held scoreless
in the final four innings.
Siler went 4-4 on the day with two doubles. Thibault
and O’Neill each added two hit for the Saints.
The Saints are back on the road again this weekend
as they head to Lewiston, ID to take part in the Guardian Plumbing,
Heating and A/C Tournament.
