Baseball: Saints standout signs with Cleveland Indians
June 12, 2006
Saint Martin’s University pitcher Brady Halverson
(Seattle, WA) signed with the Cleveland Indians today.
“I can’t believe it, I’m living my dream,” said
Brady. “It’s time to see what I can do in professional baseball.”
Halverson, a product of Seattle, WA, who graduated
from Saint Martin’s last month with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Business Administration, was a first-team selection on the Great
Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball team. In 2006 he led the
Saints with a 4.08 earned run average (4th GNAC), opposing batting
average of .252 (3rd GNAC) and five wins (tied 6th GNAC) after
undergoing Tommy John surgery just a year ago.
“His preparation and hard work have paid off for
him,” stated Saint’s Head Coach Joe Dominiak. “Especially coming off the
Tommy John surgery, he had questions in his mind; he made it through
with his work ethic. I’m excited for his opportunity to take the next
step. He’s one of the few lucky enough to get a professional contract
and it’ll be exciting to see what he can do and I wish him all the best.
I know he will represent Saint Martin’s and our baseball program well
wherever he goes.”
Halverson leaves on Wednesday for Greensboro, NC
where he will take part in a mini-spring training. From there he will
head to Burlington, NC, home of the Burlington Indians, member of the
Appalachian League and the Rookie League affiliate of the Cleveland
Indians. Burlington will start their season on June 21st against the
Danville Braves.
”I’m very excited and it’s all kind of surreal, this
has been my dream and now it’s coming true,” said Halverson. “All of my
hard work has finally paid off and I thank all of my teammates and
coaches who helped me.”
Halverson is the eighth Saints’ player to be picked
up by a Major League team in eight years.
