Baseball: Saints nearly pull off upset bid against Div. I Huskies

April 25, 2006

Seattle, WA --- University of Washington’s Zach Clem hit two home runs and drove in five as the Washington baseball team held off Saint Martin's for an 11-9 win Tuesday evening at Husky Ballpark.

The Div. I Huskies improved to 28-15 with the victory while the Saints dropped to 13-23 on the year. The Huskies earned the No. 27 spot in the Collegiate Baseball top-30 rankings this week after taking two of three games last weekend at USC.

With 19 home runs on the season and 19 games remaining in the regular season, Clem is now only three shy of the Husky record of 22. With 40 career homers, he's only two behind the all-time mark of 42. He finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI.

The Huskies took an early 1-0 advantage. However, after going down in order the first two innings, Saint Martin's took the lead with three runs in the third. Ezzard Wilkins (Fr., Lacey, WA) singled to lead off. After stealing second and moving to third on a flyout, he scored on a single from Maki Smith (Jr., Shoreline, WA). Ryan Brilhante (Fr., Kailua, HI) followed with an infield single to third base. On the play, Smith tried to take third on the throw to first base. A throw back to third to try and get him there was errant however, allowing him to score. Nate Baker (So., Bothell, WA) then singled to drive in Brilhante, giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Clem launched a towering 2-run homer to left-center to tie the game.

In the fifth, former Husky and current Saints DH Ty Kuehl (Fr., Tumwater, WA), who spent the 2004 season on the Washington roster, belted his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to put Saint Martin's back on top, 4-3.

Still in the fifth, the Saints loaded the bases on a single and two walks. Baker followed with a slow roller up the first base line. When Husky reliever Nick Haughian went to retrieve the ball and place a tag on Baker, he left the ball on the ground for an error that allowed one run to score. Adam Siler (Jr., Port Orchard, WA) followed with a sacrifice fly to give SMU a 6-3 advantage.

In the fifth, Clem drew the Huskies back to within a run. After Danny Cox knocked a one-out double, Clem went the other way with a homer to right field.

The following inning, an RBI groundout from Kuehl increased the SMU lead to 7-5. However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies took advantage of three Saints errors to score four runs and take the lead for good. Two runs scored on two separate errors from catcher Richard O'Neill (So., Edmonds, WA) and UW drove in two more with a double to give put the Huskies on top, 9-7. In the seventh, UW drove in two more with a two-out single.

The Saints added two runs in the ninth on RBI doubles from Baker and Siler.

Haughian, who allowed one run in one and two-thirds innings of relief, picked up the victory while SMU reliever Brett Efaw (Jr., Boise, ID) suffered the loss.
