Prospective student-athletes

You may have several questions, and indeed there is much more information that you need to know when considering to participate in intercollegiate athletics at Saint Martin's University.  We have provided the following links to assist you in regards to recruiting, eligibility, and admission issues including financial aid.

How do I become a student-athlete at Saint Martin's University?

There are a few different ways you can become a student-athlete at SMU. Some student-athletes are recruited to SMU to participate in a particular sport. There are numerous recruiting regulations that the SMU coaching staff must follow that may be helpful for you to know. For example, telephone calls and face-to-face contacts cannot be made until on or after June 15 prior to your senior year in high school. Read more about recruiting rules.

Some student-athletes have the opportunity to walk on to a team at SMU. If you want to walk on, you must be a regularly enrolled baccalaureate degree-seeking student and be registered for at least 12 credit hours each semester. You should contact the head coach of the sport you are interested in participating in for information about walk-on opportunities.

Finally, a Division II institution is allowed to conduct tryouts. Therefore, you may have the opportunity to try out for a team at SMU. Again, contact the head coach of the sport you are interested in participating in for information on try-out opportunities.

How do I apply for admission to SMU?

Please see  http://www.stmartin.edu/FutureStudents/Admissions.aspx for admission information for prospective students and admissions information.

Is athletic financial aid available at SMU?

Yes. Athletic financial aid is available at SMU. However, not all student-athletes at SMU receive athletic aid. The head coach of each sport is responsible for awarding athletic aid according to his/her specific sport scholarship budget. There are a few full athletic scholarships given at SMU. However, most of the athletic scholarships awarded are partial scholarships. Per NCAA and conference rules, a full athletic scholarship at SMU equals the cost of tuition, fees, room, board and books. A partial athletic scholarship is anything less than that and can range from $1 up to a full scholarship. There's no guaranteed four-year athletics scholarship in Division I, II or III. An athletics scholarship is awarded for one academic year. It may be renewed each year for a maximum of 5 years within a 6-year period. Please contact the head coach of the sport you are interested in for more information on athletic financial aid at SMU. Or visit

What is the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse?

The NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse is a central clearinghouse that certifies the athletics eligibility of all student-athletes attending Division I and II institutions as freshmen.

If you intend to participate in athletics as a freshman at SMU, you must register and be certified by the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse.

For specific information regarding initial eligibility requirements and how to register with the Clearinghouse, visit http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/ncaa/NCAA/common/index.html.

If I want to transfer from a 2-year or 4-year college to SMU, will I be immediately eligible to participate in athletics?

Please note that if you are currently on a collegiate team at another 4-year institution, you must have a signed release before we can talk to you. There are numerous NCAA and conference rules that may affect your eligibility status when transferring from a 2- or 4-year institution to SMU. For specific information on transfer regulations, visit http://www.ncaa.org/library/general/transfer_guide/2004-05/2004-05_transfer.pdf to view the 2004-05 NCAA Transfer Guide.
