Political Science
Student learning outcomes
The student will:
- Understand the development, structure and decision making
process of governments, particularly the American government.
- Understand the role of government in solving problems and
conflict that exist in a complex society.
- Be able to identify and explain the major concepts and
definitions concerning politics, government and the study of
political science.
- Understand the various theories and ideologies that have
influenced the governments and general political systems of Western
nations.
- Understand the principles and patterns that have shaped the
study of international relations.
- Understand the various theories about the cause and prevention
of war and the ways that power has been managed in the international
system.
- Have knowledge about the institutions, theories, and practices
about how American foreign policy is made.
- Have knowledge about the impact of race, gender and class on
politics and government in the United States and other nations.
- Have skills to help them analyze and evaluate political issues
and events in contemporary life.
- Understand the major issues, concerns and processes involved in
conducting political research and be able to design and carry out a
basic research project involving some aspects of politics and
government.
- Have the writing and analytical skills necessary for admission
to and success in graduate programs or law school.
- Develop an understanding of the prominent theories and/or
ideologies that have influenced the politics of the Western world
