Desired Outcome:
SMC general education courses can be taught
successfully in terms of student learning outcomes for Shanghai Maritime
University in the shortened timeframe.
Data Collection:
- Faculty interview after teaching American History for Shanghai
Maritime University
- Faculty Interview after teaching English Literature for Shanghai
Maritime University.
Interpretation of the Data:
- History teacher agrees course can maintain student learning
outcomes and rigor due to Chinese student work ethic.
- Students willing to study four to five hours a night.
- Student grades range from B+ to C.
- English professor will return to be interviewed in May
Changes to implement:
- Lack of textbook buying presents dilemma for SMC professors.
- Faculty teaching general education classes can go abroad as
faculty development.
- Faculty who return are good ambassadors for talking students
into study abroad programs on home campus and in encouraging Chinese
students to transfer to SMC.
