Closing the loop 2005
Desired Outcome:
A math placement exam will address the problem of
entry level courses being taught to students who have a wide range of
skills and ability levels.
Data Collection:
- Electronic exams given to all freshman that measured Algebra,
Pre-Calculus I and II depending on the students’ course enrollment
plans.
- Self-report by faculty teaching first level courses.
Interpretation of the Data:
- Student scores varied in terms of skills and abilities.
- Students complained that a lack of pre-preparation skewed
scores.
- Some questions were consistently poor indicators
Changes to implement:
- Some exam revision is necessary.
- Announce to incoming freshman and transfers that exam will be
held.
- Give placement exam to transfer students.
