HistoryClosing
the loop 2005
Desired Outcome:
Small groups of students critically analyzing two
case studies about international conflicts can enhance their
understanding of three theoretical approaches—Realism, Liberalism, and
Marxism.
Data Collection:
- Twenty two surveys that assessed how well the case studies
helped meet the learning objectives of enhancing students’ critical
and analytical thinking and their ability to apply theoretical
constructs.
- Open ended responses to the case studies exercise that students
contributed.
Interpretation of the Data:
- Most students reported a good understanding of the three
theoretical approaches.
- Several students felt that more class discussion of lecture
materials is warranted.
- Some students preferred lecture format to the discussion format
in groups.
- A few students lacked a basic understanding of the international
conflicts as a basis for the case studies.
Changes to implement:
- In the future a lecture on the international conflicts needs to
precede the group discussions and case exercises.
- Department needs to review the lack of a pre-requisite for this
300 level course.
