First Year Seminar
Student learning outcomes
The faculty members involved in the First Year
Seminar share the following common goals:
- To facilitate a successful transition from high school to
college.
- To improve academic skills, e.g., writing, reading, note-taking,
etc.
- To improve understanding of the academic expectations at Saint.
Martin’s.
- To guide in academic advising issues, e.g., course selection,
general requirements, etc.
- To provide a place to share questions and concerns about college
life.
- To provide an opportunity to use talents and energies in service
to others.
- To foster a deeper awareness and understanding of cultural
difference that will support students in participating
collaboratively, respectfully and responsibly in our diverse campus
community and the world.
- To engage in a service learning project that not only reflects
the mission of Saint Martin’s University as a Catholic Benedictine
institution, but provides the opportunity to reflect on the
students’ mission, values and role as a citizen of the Saint
Martin’s community and the world community.
