Closing the loop 2005

Desired Outcome:   Cooperative teamwork includes understanding ethical based decision-making, applying leadership and management skills, using critical thinking and judgment skills, applying business functional skills and tools, and participating in team exercises responsibly and cooperatively.

Data Collection:

  • Faculty in eight courses (174 students) utilizing group projects assessed individual student’s participation and leadership within the student’s assigned group.
  • Faculty rated each student as either very involved and showing team leadership, showing acceptable team participation or resisting team participation.

Interpretation of the Data:

  • 56.32% of the students were very involved and showed team leadership
  • 32.76% of the students accepted team participation
  • 10.92% of the students resisted team participation
  • Both economics courses had over 50% of the students ranked as only accepting team participation.
  • Business 330 had 32% of the students resisting team participation and 28% accepting team participation.
  • Business 340 had 25% of the students resisting team participation

Changes to implement:

  • Differences between student participation in specific team projects across courses needs more investigation.
  • The incorporation of more or less team projects warrants further faculty discussion.
