Endowment Scholarships
Alumni Association Scholarship
The Saint Martin's Alumni
Association developed this scholarship available to any student attending
Saint Martin's University. To receive this scholarship, a student must
fill out an application and submit it to the Alumni Association.
Recipients must maintain the University's minimum GPA. This is a two year
scholarship.

Ames Scholarship
The children of Lawrence and Carol
Ames created an endowment fund honoring their parents. Larry Ames attended
Saint Martin's University from '61-64 and was enrolled in the Civil
Engineering Program. This scholarship is intended for civil engineering
students at Saint Martin's University. An annual scholarship is awarded to
any student who is enrolled in the Civil Engineering Program, in good
standing of the student chapter of A.S.C.E., maintains a 2.5 GPA, and
shows evidence of the qualities looked for in members of the professional
engineering community.

ASSMU Leadership Endowment Fund
This fund was established
to encourage and enhance the quality of elected student government
officials. The stipend received is remuneration for dedicated service to
ASSMU and to Saint Martin's University. The recipient must serve their
entire ASSMU term and must be approved by the VP for Student Affairs at
the end of the student's tenure.

Branca Memorial Scholarship
An annual scholarship is awarded
to a deserving student who needs to perfect his schooling. This
scholarship is available to any Saint Martin's student whom fits the
criteria. The scholarship was established by the Honorable Mr.
Justice A.E. Branca in memory of his parents Philip and Teresa Branca.

Bernie Briere Athletic Scholarship
Bernie Briere was an
inspiration to many people, including Rick Rizz and Randy Johnson
(formerly) of the Seattle Mariners organization. Bernie was a young man who met the challenges
of cystic fibrosis and excelled in baseball, basketball, and golf (at Saint Martin's). This fund will help a student-athlete who
exhibits need purchasing textbooks.

Father Matthew Britt Scholarship
Funding for this award
comes from the estate of Dr. Louis H. Clerf who graduated from Saint
Martin's in 1906, and past away in 1989. Dr. Clerf was internationally
recognized for developing the first medically proven technique for the
early diagnosis of lung cancer. He helped develop the first successful
heart-lung machine along with other contributions to health care. This
award is given to a deserving student based upon the Saint Martin's
University Scholarship committee guidelines.

Brulotte Scholarship
Hervy and Florence Brulotte
established this scholarship many years ago for students from rural areas,
preference given to those from the Yakima area. These two wonderful
contributors recently passed away, but their legacy lives on through this
scholarship.

Cady Award in Education
This fund was established
in memory of Lillian Cady's grandparents and parents who valued education
and helped her discover the joy of learning and teaching. Dr. Lillian Cady
was the Dean of Education at Saint Martin's University and remains active in
the Saint Martin's community. There are two annual awards of equal
amounts; Inspirational Award (which is to recognize inspirational
leadership and potential as an inspirational educator), and the
Achievement Award (which is to recognize outstanding leadership and
academic achievement.

Cammarano Family Scholarship
Endowment
This endowment was made possible
by David and Sharon Cammarano, longtime Olympia residents and friends of
Saint Martin's University. The Cammarano family ties to Saint Martin's
originated when his father sold soft drinks to the bookstore manager, and
every since family members have always had an interest in the University.
The family felt that by establishing this scholarship for students of
Saint Martin's was a good way to repay the University for what it does in our
community, and also leaving something of a permanent nature that will
honor the family. The purpose of this endowment is to attract and to
provide support to students from Thurston and Mason Counties of the State
of Washington who have financial need.

Father Richard Cebula Faculty Endowment
Fund
This Fund was established to honor
Fr. Richard Cebula, O.S.B. who is credited with founding Saint Martin's
Engineering Department. It is used to broaden professional
understanding and enhancing the teaching ability of the faculty members,
as well as recognition of the Engineering Division Faculty of Saint
Martin's University.

Ben B. Cheney Foundation Scholarship
The Cheney Foundation was
established in 1955 in Washington state. This Foundation provides students
with financial assistance who exemplify high qualities of leadership,
character, achievement, citizenship and motivation.

Maurice Clark Merit Fellowship
The Maurice Clark Merit Fellowship Scholarship was
created by Maurice Clark in 1983 before his passing in 2001. By
establishing the Clark Foundation, Maurice provided students with
financial aid in attending Saint Martin's University as well as a number of
other schools around the Pacific Northwest. The recipients of the
scholarship are individuals that are deserving students in any academic
field. Maurice “Dooly” Clark was man dedicated to serving students from
Catholic schools.

Henry Clerf Scholarship
Funding for this award

Mike Contris Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship
commemorates the accomplishments of a distinguished humanitarian; a
professor, writer, scholar and warm friend of students who, until his
death in 1985, taught English and other Humanities courses at Saint
Martin's University for over four-nine years. This scholarship is
intended to foster the kind of exemplary work in the Humanities that Mike,
himself, accomplished.

Virginia Coomes Women’s Scholarship
Together with the women of the Attic Shop and numerous
friends of the family, the children of Virginia Coomes established this
Fund in memory of Mrs. Virginia Coomes. Virginia was a member of the Saint
Martin’s Mothers Club which started the Attic Shop Thrift Store in 1972.
Her husband and two sons all attended either the Saint Martin’s High
School or University and she was always very supportive of the University.
Virginia passed away on October 19, 2000. Her family began this
scholarship for women attending Saint Martin's University exemplifying
dedication, leadership, academic excellence, and/or need while studying at
the University.

Donaldson Student Athlete Book Award
John Donaldson and his family established the Donaldson
Student Athlete Book Award in remembrance of his father Robert “Windy”
Donaldson. The Donaldson family has been apart of the Saint Martin's
University community over many years. Beginning with his father Bob attended
Saint Martin’s and played basketball in the early 40’s, continuing with
John playing basketball during the 60’s, and ending with John’s son Todd
during the 90’s. For a student-athlete(s) to receive this award they must
be in good academic standing, and is in need of additional assistance to
procure textbooks and basic school supplies. The award could be granted to
a student-athlete(s) based on special needs as determined by the
committee.

Brian F. Doolin Aerospace Engineering
Scholarship Fund
Mr. Doolin, still living,
is being honored by his family with this award. He was a Chemistry
and Physics Major and Math Minor at Saint Martin's University who went to
work with NASA and helped put men on the moon. This scholarship is awarded
to a student interested in pursuing a career in Aerospace Engineering by
the department.

The Theodore F. Druffel Memorial
Scholarship
Theodore Druffel was
awarded a Gold Medallion for Academic Achievement when he graduated from
Saint Martin's High School in 1924. After graduation, he returned to
Eastern Washington to farm with his father. According to his family, he
was a quiet, but demanding and generous person. There are stories of
someone coming to his door asking for a donation to a school, and he gave
them $2,000 rather than the $200 they had asked for. Students
eligible for this scholarship are those from the Southeastern part of
Washington.

Patrick J. Duffy Quasi-Scholarship
Patrick J. Duffy graduated
from Saint Martin's University in 1942, in his honor this scholarship was
established. This scholarship is awarded to those chosen by the
scholarship committee of Saint Martin's.

Father Bede Ernsdorf Scholarship
This memorial scholarship
was created to honor Fr. Bede Ernsdorf, O.S.B. who taught chemistry at
Saint Martin's and was the Chair of the Science and Mathematics Department
for 35 years. Those students who are pursuing a career in teaching the
sciences are eligible for this award.

Feldmann Golf Quasi-Scholarship
This fund was established
with the monies from the estate of Lavelle Feldmann. It is designated for
the men's and women's golf teams at Saint Martin's University.

Linda Fletcher Memorial Scholarship Endowment for
Extension Center Students
Linda Fletcher was the director of military programs at
Saint Martin's University. She passed away April 11, 2001 in her home after a
two-year battle with cancer. She enjoyed spending time with family and
friends and was known for her devotion to the field of education and her
faith. She had worked for the University for seven years, starting as the
director of the Fort Lewis extension campus and later becoming the
director of military programs for both McCord and Fort Lewis. Those that receive this
scholarship are undergraduate students making progress toward a
baccalaureate degree at the military base extension programs of Saint
Martin's University. The student(s) should exhibit the characteristics that
Linda valued and exhibited in making a difference in the lives of others.

The Gottfried and Mary Fuchs Foundation
This Foundation is
committed to provide students financial aid through their academic
endeavors. Each year, this Foundation provides assistance to
students of Saint Martin's that are residents of the greater Pierce
County, with a special consideration to handicapped individuals.

George Library Periodicals
Quasi-Endowment Fund
Walter M. George of
Aberdeen, who passed away in 1975, asked in his will that Saint Martin's
would become the sole beneficiary of his trust fund. This Fund established
many great benefits to the University including: a scholarship awarded to a
student from Grays Harbor County, financial assistance towards library
periodical subscriptions, and financial assistance in purchasing
microfilm.

Victor and Ruth Habersetzer
Scholarship
Mr. and Mrs. Habersetzer
were involved in the timber industry in the Raymond, WA area. They wanted
to establish a scholarship for a worthy Saint Martin's student. The
Habersetzer's created a scholarship for a qualified Christian student who
has been active in his/her church, either Catholic or Protestant.

The William Randolph Hearst Scholarship
Fund
The Hearst Foundation
established this scholarship at Saint Martin's University helping students
pursue their academic endeavors. Because of the Foundation's charter
limits funding to within the United States, this scholarship is restricted
to domestic students.

Francis Gordon Kearns Memorial
Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was
created to honor Alleene Kearns' husband Francis Gordon Kearns who was a
psychologist. The Kearns' have been great friends of Saint Martin's and
this scholarship assists students who are enrolled full-time and show
evidence of sound academic performance and/or financial need.

Keehl Grant Scholarship Fund
In his will, Walter E.
Keehl left his estate to Saint Martin's University to establish a
scholarship. This scholarship provides financial assistance to
students who are orphans or indigent children.

Father Eugene Kelenbenz Memorial
Scholarship Fund
Chris Harris (HS55) established this scholarship in memory
of former music director Fr. Eugene Kelenbenz. Harris participated in the
glee club during his time at Saint Martin's and remembered Fr. Eugene's
influence on student's lives. Harris specified that this scholarship must
provide funds in perpetuity for a music student.

Kreielsheimer Endowment Fund
Leo and Creye Kreielsheimer
operated fish canneries in Alaska and left the bulk of their fortune to
the Foundation in furtherance of arts and education philanthropy in the
states of Washington and Alaska. The first priority of this
endowment is intended to keep Kreielsheimer Hall on Saint Martin's campus,
its operating systems and the equipment and instruments used therein in
excellent condition to continue supporting arts-related activities in the
building. As a second priority, it is intended to enrich the arts programs
of Saint Martin's. This endowment is also used for scholarships for
students.

Fitzgerald Book Award Endowment
Fund
It is the donor's intention
that the Fund be used as a permanently restricted endowment to help one or
more Saint Martin's University students who are majoring in Special Education
purchase textbooks or computer resources that are related to their studies
at Saint Martin's.

Father Killian Malvey, O.S.B.
Scholarship Endowment
This endowment was created
in 2001 by over 200 Saint Martin's High School and University alumni to honor
his 65th birthday. The scholarship is awarded to students who are
challenged by the process of adjusting to campus life but, despite those
challenges, have potential to accomplish great things at Saint Martin's
University and in life. Nominees shall demonstrate an innate talent for
leadership and service to others, as well as enthusiasm for the mission of
Saint Martin's. Awardees must have achieved, or plan to achieve sophomore
or higher status by the academic term in which the scholarship is applied
to his/her financial aid account.

Malcolm McKenzie Engineering
Scholarship
Jan McKenzie established
this scholarship to honor her husband Malcolm. It is her intentions to
award this scholarship to a deserving student who is majoring in
engineering and from the state of Washington. Selection in based on the
criteria of scholarship committee and financial need.

James F. (Fritz) Mottman Scholarship
Fund
The Mottman Scholarship was
created from the estate of John W. Mottman in memory of James (Fritz)
Mottman. Annual scholarship awards or loans are distributed from this
endowment are provided for students enrolled in Saint Martin's in
financial need.

McDaniel Scholarship Quasi-Endowment
This endowment was created to
honor the memory and dedication to Saint Martin's by Engineering Professor
Emeritus Colonel Charles D. McDaniel. Col. McDaniel was a leader in
building Saint Martin's Engineering programs and facilities, and was
presented the Saint Martin's President's Medal in Sept. 1971 for his
outstanding efforts. Financial support is provided from this scholarship
to a student at Saint Martin's who is currently enrolled in good standing.

Virginia and Freddy Newman Scholarship Endowment
Albert W. Newman established the Virginia and Freddy
Newman scholarship endowment for students who exhibit special initiative,
drive and potential. The scholarship is named after his wife and son. The
student must show willingness to work hard and desire to succeed. A
student that is chosen for this scholarship should be one who is not
afraid to work hard and thus shows great promise in whatever field he or
she may select. The endowment was named for his deceased wife Virginia and
a son that he lost 40 years ago named Freddy.

Thomas B. O’Grady Scholarship for the Arts
The Thomas B. O’Grady Scholarship for the Arts was created in memorial
through gifts from over 30 family and friends of Thomas. Thomas graduated
from Saint Martin’s High School in 1944 and from the University in 1948. He
was considered a special advisor and benefactor of Saint Martin’s. This
annual scholarship is awarded to students in good academic standing who
are studying the arts and/or the humanities with preference given to those
who have declared a major or minor in musical or theater arts or a
concentration in art studies combined with a degree such as education. Or
the scholarship can be awarded to students who have declared a major in
interdisciplinary Humanities studies preferably with at least one of the
three concentration areas in the arts.

O'Grady General Scholarship
Endowment Charter
Kathleen O'Grady, wife of
Thomas B. O'Grady established this scholarship in memory of her husband.
Because of his constant support for the students of Saint Martin's
University, Kathleen created this general scholarship for a worthy student.

O'Grady International
Programs Endowment Charter
Thomas O'Grady recognized
the importance of international programming at the University level
(academically, culturally, and financially) especially given Saint
Martin's location on the Pacific Rim, and he generously supported its
international program. Reflecting that interest, this Fund is intended to
support special needs of the Office of International Student Services and
the Institute of Pacific Rim Studies that cannot be met through the
operating budget.

Endowment Charter
The purpose of the Fund is
to help assure O'Grady Library, its components and environs are kept in as
"like new" condition as possible year after year. As a second priority,
Fund resources may be used to improve library technology or the book
collection.

O'Grady Marketing Endowment
Charter
In his encouragements to
family and friends to seek new directions at opportune moments, and even
in his personal approaches to philanthropy, Thomas O'Grady was a
"marketer", a salesman. ]Never pushy, yet never shy, he was always quick
to offer keen ideas about how the University and its affiliated organizations
could better present themselves to the public and prospective students to
increase revenues and strengthen overall image. He often backed those
ideas with his own generous support. With Tom's salesman's perspectives as
a catalyst, this Fund was created to help Saint Martin's seize marketing
opportunities that should not be overlooked.

O'Grady Campus Preservation
Endowment Charter
Mr. O'Grady had great
concern for the overall quality of campus facilities, and he generously
supported projects to expand or improve them. With that as a genesis, (and
given the crucial need to keep buildings and grounds in good condition to
improve marketing potential, boost constituent pride in the University, and
to serve students and employees properly and safely), this Fund is
intended to provide resources for vital, campus-wide capital needs that
cannot be met through the operating budget.

O'Grady New Opportunities Endowment
Charter
Tom O'Grady had a tenacious
entrepreneurial spirit that compelled him to help Saint Martin's start or
improve a wide variety of projects and programs. His gift support was an
inspiration to all and it helped leverage contributions from many others.
This Fund was intended to carry-on that vision and support by providing
seed money for strategic initiatives that will help the University achieve
new revenues from tuition, auxiliary exploration and development; campus
master planning; planning/initiating capital campaigns; and other such
initiatives that cannot be achieved through the budget.

Mary J. O'Grady Scholarship
Original criteria for this scholarship was for a nursing
student, however, with the discontinuation of the nursing program, Mr.
O'Grady redirected the criteria to an Education student with special
consideration given to one who has declared a minor, or concentration, in
the arts.

Shereen Paff Special Education
Scholarship
Shereen Paff spent 25 years
working and teaching in the field of Special Education. She specialized in
visually impaired children and special education children in elementary
schools. She was a great friend who possessed a wonderful sense of humor,
and she dedicated her life in helping children. A scholarship was
established in her memory for an undergraduate or masters student with a
major in Special Education with substantial financial need, and has
completed at least 18 credit hours in the Special Education program with
at least a 3.6 GPA. To be eligible for this scholarship one must
demonstrate ability to establish empathy and maintain quality
relationships with children, express evidence of outside community
involvement, and posses the potential to be an outstanding educator
through traits of inspirational leadership and academic achievement.

Panowicz Musical Arts Scholarship
The children of Anton “Tony” and Madeline “Madge” Panowicz created this scholarship in memory of their parents. The
scholarship is given to a student(s) studying in the musical arts who show
particular promise and/or need. Both Tony and Madge attended Saint
Martin's University and have greatly contributed to the success of the
school.

Edward J. "Nick" Prestek Music
Scholarship
Linda Lee, daughter of Nick
Prestek, created this scholarship in honor of her father. She has
specified that this scholarship to be awarded to a deserving student who
is an undergraduate with a major or minor in music or seeking an
endorsement in music education. This candidate must show substantial
financial need.

Rants Family Scholarship Endowment
The Rants family has been
involved in community activities and philanthropy since the early 1970's.
Included in those activities was working with Father John Scott, O.S.B. of
Saint Martin's on various committee's in the 1980's. That is the link that
got the Rants family first involved with Saint Martin's University. Ron Rants
became a Trustee of Saint Martin's in 1999. The interest of the
family is encouraging students to enroll at Saint Martin's in either
business or engineering. The Rants are great believers in private
education, particularly at Saint Martin's. To receive this
scholarship a student must be majoring in Business or engineering, and
maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.5.

Father Placidus Reischman, O.S.B. Scholarship
Father Placidus Reischman, O.S.B.
was a devout member of the Saint Martin's College community for many
years. After joining Saint Martin’s Abbey in 1947, he earned his
undergraduate degree from the College in 1950. He later obtained his
doctorate in zoology and returned to the College as a teacher and
administrator. His influence to the school was absolutely tremendous.
Father Placidus established biology as a major area of study at Saint
Martin's College, and brought thousands of dollars of grant money to the
school. The scholarship established in his name is given to a sophomore
attending Saint Martin's College who is a biology major. “Father Pacidus
was a gifted scholar who was dedicated to his students and unselfish in
giving of his energies to help others,” said College President David
Spangler.

Jacob P. and Phillipine Schmidt Rettenmayer
Endowment for Chemistry
For almost 40 years Mrs. Rettenmayer made an annual gift in support of
Saint Martin's Jacob P. Rettenmayer Professorship in Chemistry. This
endowment is used strictly for special equipment, projects, salary and
program needs of the Chemistry Department at Saint Martin's.

Martha Russell General Need Scholarship
Upon her request, Martha Russell left her estate to Saint Martin's
University. This is a general scholarship given to students who are in need
of financial aid.

Martha Russell Minority Scholarship
Martha Russell, an alumna and friend of Saint Martin's, established this
scholarship for minority students. Under her request, this scholarship is
provided to any minority student who is not involved in ROTC or any other
military program. This scholarship is intended for non-violent, peaceful
work.

Father Sebastian Ruth O.S.B. Theology Scholarship
This scholarship was established in honor of Father Sebastian Ruth O.S.B
who taught at Saint Martin's for many years. This scholarship is awarded
to deserving students who are majoring in Theology or Religion or who have
expressed interest in either field.

The Monks of Saint Martin's College created this scholarship for a general
scholarship. It is awarded to any students attending Saint Martin's.

Ed Schaller Memorial Scholarship
The Ed Schaller Memorial Scholarship was created in
remembrance of Edward F. Schaller Jr. who passed away in 2001. Ed
graduated from both Saint Martin's High School in 1962 and from the
College in 1966. He served as a member of the Alumni Association Board and
constantly gave graciously to Saint Martin's. In memory of his dedication
to the College, this scholarship was created to financially help a
deserving student(s) while attending Saint Martin's University.

The Frank Schilter Family Scholarship
This Scholarship was
established in memory of Frank Schilter. Elizabeth Schilter, Frank's
widow, created this scholarship for a deserving student with financial
need.

Schonenbach Scholarship Endowment
The Schonobach Scholarship was
established to help needy students from Sacred Heart Parish who wish to
study at Saint Martin's University, or Saint Placid High School. Recipients
are selected by Sacred Heart Parish at irregular intervals.

Frost and Margaret Snyder Scholarship
Endowment
Funding for this
scholarship comes from a series of grants beginning in 1983 from The Frost
and Margaret Snyder Foundation. An annual scholarship is awarded to
deserving students who graduated from a Catholic High School and who have
achieved and are maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

John Spiller Scholarship
In remembrance of her father John Spiller, Mitzi
Stewart together with her husband Robert and extended family, established
the John Spiller Scholarship Endowment. This scholarship was founded in
memory and honor of John and his many years of affiliation with Saint
Martin’s Abbey, High School and College as a student and as an attorney
providing professional services. The scholarship is given to a student(s)
who demonstrates outstanding performance and financial need and who is
pursuing studies in any of the Liberal Arts.

Evelyn and Fred Treichel Memorial
Scholarship Endowment
Tom and JoAnn Finch
established this Fund in 1992 to honor and memorialize JoAnn's parents
who, according to JoAnn, were always very concerned about Catholic
education. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students who
demonstrate financial need.

Peter V. Vale Scholarship
This fund was named for,
and established to honor former Saint Martin's Regent Peter Vale, who also
was a former trustee of the Ben B. Cheney Foundation. It is awarded to a
Saint Martin's student majoring in Business and is enrolled in the MBA
Program. This student should exhibit strong qualities of scholarship,
leadership, community participation and citizenship.

Horace J. Whitacre Scholarship
This fund was established
to honor civil engineer, Mr. William J. Whitacre by an unknown donor with
ongoing gifts from the Tacoma-Olympia Section of the American Society of
Civil Engineers. To receive this scholarship a student must be enrolled in
Civil Engineering at Saint Martin's University, a current member of ASCE,
maintain a sound academic performance, and possess professional abilities
and traits.
